Akron to Pay $4.85 Million to Jayland Walker’s Family After Fatal Police Shooting

The City of Akron has agreed to pay $4.85 million to the family of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man fatally shot by police in 2022. The settlement follows months of protests and national attention after eight officers fired 94 rounds during a traffic stop, killing Jayland.

Akron should be a place where everyone is safe. We all know there are important problems to address in our community, and it is through our continued commitment, courage, and conversations we will move our city forward, together.

What Happened?

Jayland was shot more than 40 times after fleeing a traffic stop. Body camera footage showed he was unarmed when officers opened fire. The case sparked outrage and calls for police reform across the country.
